Gifts Of The Holy Spirit

Gift Of Miracles

NKJV Notes by Pastor Bob Caldwell

Simply defined, this gift is a supernatural suspension and overruling of God's natural laws. In this study we will see that for God a "miracle" is for Him not really a miracle. It is no harder for God to create the universe and establish the natural laws of that universe than it is to overrule all that makes up that universe to bring about His purposes.

I. Miracles over natural death

  1. I Kings 17:9-24 - The raising of the widow's son by Elijah.
  2. II Kings 4:18-37 - The raising of the Shunammite woman's son by Elisha.
  3. Luke 7:11-16 - The raising of the widow of Nain's son by Jesus.
  4. Luke 8:41-56 - The raising of Jairus' daughter by Jesus.
  5. John 11:1-44 - The raising of Lazarus by Jesus.
  6. Acts 9:36-43 - The raising of Dorcas by Peter.
  7. Acts 20:7-12 - The raising of Eutychus by Paul.

II. Miracles in Judgment

  1. Exodus 7-12:30 - Plagues of Egypt.
  2. Numbers 16:31-35 - The earth splits open and swallows up those in rebellion with Korah.
  3. II Chronicles 26:15-21 - Uzziah judged for his pride in being given leprosy.
  4. Genesis 19:24-26 - The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
  5. Acts 5:3-10 - Ananias and Sapphira are struck dead.
  6. Acts 13:6-13 - Elymas, a sorcerer, is made blind for a period of time.

III. Miracles of Supply

  1. Exodus 16:4 - God's provision of manna.
  2. Exodus 17:6 - God's provision of water.
  3. Deuteronomy 29:5 - The preservation of the cloth- ing of the Jews.
  4. I Kings 17:10-16 - The multiplication of flour and oil provided for the widow of Zarephath.
  5. II Kings 4:1-7 - The multiplication of the oil for a prophet's widow.
  6. John 2:1-11 - Water turned to wine.
  7. John 6:1-14 - Jesus feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fish.
  8. Matthew 17:27 - Tax money provided in the mouth of a fish.

IV. Miracles Affecting Nature

  1. Judges 6:36-40 - Gideon's fleece made wet and dry.
  2. Numbers 22:22-31 - The donkey that talked.
  3. Exodus 14:15-16 - The Red Sea opened.
  4. Joshua 6:12-20 - The collapse of the walls of Jericho.
  5. Joshua 10:12-14 - The sun appeared to stand still for an extended period of time.
  6. Matthew 8:23-24 - Jesus calms a raging storm with a word.

V. The Dangers In The Use of This Gift

  1. Samson's Life
    • Judges 14-16 - He allowed self-deception to rule his life as he separated the use of the gift from his personal accountability before God.
  2. Temptation to Become Self-Serving
    • Matthew 4:9 - Jesus does not fall prey to the temptation of using a miraculous power for self-serving interests in this account. But the same temptation has struck many of God's servants.
  3. Becoming the Object of Men's Praise
    • Acts 3:12, Acts 14:8-18 - Here are two accounts of people looking to the servant of God instead of God when a miracle is performed.

VI. Conclusion

By the very nature of God's created order, He has established the natural laws He created to be the general means of His will being worked out in the world. However, in this fallen world we should expect God to overrule those laws if it will best serve His own divine purposes.
